Back from Nosy Komba
In August, a small team of volunteers spent several weeks on Nosy Komba, working hand in hand with the local community on a range of projects. We shared updates regularly on our social channels, and the full trip report is now available below.
The highlight of the year is Banana High School, the first and only high school on Nosy Komba. After a year and a half of construction, the building was ready just in time for the new school year. It now welcomes its first 40 students, who no longer have to leave the island to continue their education. Teachers and students also built desks, chairs and doors from wood brought over from Nosy Be with the help of Antonio and Benedikt. In addition, 16 new solar panels are now installed and they will power the whole campus.
This year’s teacher training brought together teachers from Banana School and other schools on the island, and four new teachers joined the team.
Beyond Antitorona, the team repaired the maternity in Antamotamo and signed an agreement with the village to extend this vital health centre, which more and more families rely on (3 to 4 babies are born there every month). We also delivered books to the primary schools of Anjiabe and Ampasinahombe, and visited our university students in Diego Suarez.
