Development of the Health Centre of Antamotamo

The Antamotamo medical centre and maternity — the second such facility supported by Sunshine in Nosy
Komba, alongside the historical one in Antintorona — has grown rapidly since Sunshine took over its
management in 2024. It now handles 3 to 4 births per month plus a steady stream of general patients,
filling a real gap in a village whose only healthcare building had previously been left unequipped and
largely abandoned.
The health center of Antatomotamo is to be considered as a subsidiary of the one in Antitoroma. Monica,
the nurse in charge of the Antitorona health center is the one managing the other one. Jessica is the nurse in
charge of the Antatomotamo health center. The medical team also includes a stagiaire (Sandra) and a newly
recruited doctor (Eddy) who are located in Antitoroma.
The health center requires substantial refurbishment and also an extension since the number of people
visiting it is constantly increasing. The doctor will regularly visit the center and this will allow using the
centre as a medical centre instead of just a maternity, allowing access to national vaccination programme
among other collaboration with national health system
Concerning the extension, on 18 August 2026, Sunshine in Nosy Komba and the Fokontany of
Antamotamo (the local village authority) formalised this collaboration in a signed cooperation agreement
(see Annex), under which the Fokontany — which remains the owner of the premises — grants Sunshine
indefinite authorisation to use two buildings on the site for its charitable healthcare activities, in exchange
for Sunshine fully covering staff, supplies and maintenance costs, at no cost to the community.
This agreement explicitly covers a second, newly-built but empty and rapidly deteriorating building next to
the current dispensary. The objective of this project is to renovate and equip that second building as a
dedicated observation and treatment room, where patients — including mothers after delivery and patients
with more complex conditions — can be kept under medical supervision, rather than being sent home or
referred elsewhere immediately after treatment.
This project was formally presented to the population of Antamotamo on 20 August 2026, in a meeting
organised by the Fokontany. The community's response was very positive, reflected in the same-day
signing of the long-term cooperation agreement.
